The South has the nation’s highest uninsured rates, overwhelming rates of poverty, chronic health conditions, and racial health inequities. Southerners are organizing to show the nation that we can unite to ensure affordable healthcare for our people and fight the legacy of slavery and racial injustice that has plagued our region.

With only 12 states left to expand Medicaid, Southerners from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina are uniting in the shared struggle to expand Medicaid for our essential workers, our communities of color and our uninsured families and children.

With over 1.5 million COVID-19 cases, and 49 rural hospital closures since 2014, expanding Medicaid would allow nearly 7 million people who are uninsured to gain coverage in these eight states that have denied health coverage to their residents.
