I’m a Business, Man
Jay-Z said it best, “I’m not a businessman. I’m a business, man.” Artists are trendmakers and before entrepreneurship was cool, they did it out of necessity. Art reflects and challenges culture, which is constantly shifting. So, with the changes in culture and society, how do artists “flip the script” to function as businesses? It’s easier said than done, and it’s easier done than successfully accomplished. We’re going to sit with two Durham artists, Candy Carver and Dasan Ahanu, to talk more about the creative economy and their roles in building their respective businesses, revenue streams, marketing and branding.
Branding and Shifting Culture
From Killastration to the Art Bishop, his personal brand has always been a larger than life presence reflective of a hip-hop aficionado mixed with comic books and social commentary. In 2006, Art Beats + Lyrics, the nation’s largest traveling urban art exhibition, was born to challenge how art is appreciated. All of these things create brand equity and further the reach of a brand’s impact. Additionally, they are building blocks of an evolving culture. Tobias and Dubelyoo will talk about branding and observing culture to drive it forward.
Tobias met Mattie while location-scouting for The Foreign Exchange’s Leave It All Behind album. As a great friend and fellow entrepreneur, it’s good to speak with someone that understands the challenges and the solitude of what it is that you do. When Mattie told him that he was done with entrepreneurship, he was sad, but understood his reasoning. Tobias and Mattie will discuss what it took to leave entrepreneurship, the thinking behind it and why this decision is, sometimes, the best one.
